What is “Omamori”?
Omamori, also known as "お守り" in Japanese, is a traditional protective charm that comes in various styles. These small bags are often inscribed with the name of a deity or a desired wish. They are believed to possess sacred powers that protect the wearer from harm and bring good luck and positive changes.
The wishes written on omamori can vary greatly, such as praying for good health, academic success, or love. The wearer can choose to carry or place the omamori in a location or item related to their wish. For example, an omamori for academic success can be hung on a backpack or pencil case, while one for love can be kept in a close pocket. An omamori for financial luck can be placed in a wallet. The way of wearing or using omamori can be adjusted according to individual needs.
The validity period of an omamori is usually about one year. When the desired wish is fulfilled or when the omamori becomes damaged or soiled, it is recommended to return it to the shrine or temple from where it originated. If that is not possible, one can handle it at home. Simply place the old omamori on a clean white paper, sprinkle coarse salt in the order of "left, right, left," and express gratitude for the blessings of the past year. Finally, roll up the white paper with the omamori inside and dispose of it in the trash or burn it.
